Sea buckthorn berries have an unusually high vitamin C content. Depending on the variety, this varies between 200 and 900 mg per 100 g of fruit meat. This means that the average vitamin C content of 50 mg per 100 g in lemons or oranges is exceeded several times. Sea buckthorn also contains small amounts of vitamin B12, which is otherwise almost exclusively found in animal food. This is caused by a symbiosis with bacteria on the outer skin of the fruit.
