In the nose, the minerality already beguiles with earthy-spicy notes that are reminiscent of wet stones or the air after a summer thunderstorm. In the midst of these complex aromas, typical aromas of ripe apples, juicy peaches and piquant, refreshing citrus notes are found for Rieslings from the Middle Moselle. On the palate, Layet GG impressively proves that this is a delicate Riesling with a silky structure and strong grip, which is less concerned with primary fruit aromas than with deep minerality. The long finish underlines the character of the expressive and dense Riesling with enormous aging potential. Nik Weis has owned a plot of just 0.8 hectares in the Mehringer Blattenberg since 2006, which was called `Layet `until the vineyard reform in 1971 and is still considered one of the best vineyard parcels in the Moselle section from Schweich to Neumagen. In the course of the past 13 years, Nik Weis and his team have increasingly experienced that this parcel is a formerly separate location for good reasons, which the VDP also recognized in 2017 and classified LAYET as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® . Layet counts as one of the few historical wine-growing landscapes of the Moselle and has not been reorganized until today. The appearance is correspondingly impressive with protruding rocky outcrops and laboriously laid out slate terraces, on which vineyards with a vine age of up to 100 years thrive. The proximity to the Moselle, which is very broad at this point, favors a light-flooded, warm microclimate in which the vines grow particularly well. The high Rebalter also promotes the formation of highly aromatic grapes with naturally low yields.
