Wasabi is a green root plant with a distinctly pungent taste. Originally native to Japan, it only thrives in flowing water. The root, which is comparable to horseradish, is now also cultivated in New Zealand and the USA. Wasabi is traditionally used as a seasoning for sushi and roasted nuts and legumes. The typical spiciness of wasabi is caused by the volatile mustard oils it contains and therefore burns the throat and nose. Wasabi is offered as fresh root, powder or paste. Wasabi powder: S and B is probably the best wasabi powder for connoisseurs. It is mixed with water in a 1:2 ratio to form a paste and can be served plain or with soy sauce for sushi.
