Available in early October. Sumac is obtained from the fruit of the dyer tree that grows in the eastern Mediterranean. The powder is pleasantly sour and fresh and in Turkey, for example, it is often served as a seasoning with salt on the dinner table or the raw onions for grilled meat are seasoned with it. Otherwise it tastes good with rice, chicken, fish, seafood and meaty vegetables such as eggplant.
