Sumac, also called sumac or Sicilian sugar, is obtained from the fruits of the spice sumac, which is related to the well-known sumac tree. Its taste is slightly sour, fruity and tart. Sumac is a popular table spice in Turkey and Iran. The ground berries go well with eggplant, fish, seafood, chicken, yogurt, chickpeas, lamb, lentils, rice, pine nuts and walnuts. Mixed with freshly sliced onions, sumac is also enjoyed as an appetizer. The Turkish fast food specialty doner kebab is often seasoned with sumac.
