In the 11th century, the Archbishop of Mainz, Bardo, ordered the clearing (rotten = Middle High German for clearing) of the Rottland mountain. The stony slate and quartzite soils give the Rieslings a voluminous, elegant and aristocratic maturity that has a very long storage potential. This Grosse Gewachs is a powerfully mineral Riesling with fine aromas of apricot and vineyard peach. The wine is still at the beginning of its development and already shows a beautiful harmony of fruit and minerality. It was matured in large, traditional barrels. All 21 Grosse Gewachs were bottled with screw caps at Kunstler. .
