Cayenne pepper is hot, but not actually pepper. It is obtained as a powder from particularly hot, dried red chilies. Very popular in Latin American and Indian cuisine, the spice is also used to make Tabasco sauce, chili sauce and curry powder. A small pinch of it is usually enough for an entire dish.
