    The sour success story began in Vienna`s Favoriten district. At the age of 14, Erwin Gegenbauer was still rather inexperienced in drinking and once had a bottle of wine left half-full for a while. And lo and behold: The once good wine now tasted like a decent vinegar, certainly quite inharmonious, but still impressively clear. But a start had been made.

    As junior boss of the family cannery, which was founded in 1929 by his grandfather Ignaz Gegenbauer, Erwin Gegenbauer, who is privately blessed with a great passion for enjoyment, did not want to accept the loss of quality due to depressed prices. Erwin Gegenbauer quickly sold his parents` canning factory and took the first step towards the highest quality.

    One of the buyers at Naschmarkt gave him his breakthrough. He came by one day and presented the astonished Gegenbauer with a recipe for which he had used the vinegar. That was the turning point. At the same time, the perfectionist in him woke up. His vinegar had to be the best!

    Today the Austrian, who likes to modestly describe himself as the smallest vinegar brewer in the world and yet should actually call himself a vinegar researcher, is the master of 70 types of vinegar and has also established other branches of enjoyment. Since 2006, three types of Gegenbauer coffee from small vineyards have been sold freshly roasted by a Trieste importer at the Naschmarkt and served in renowned establishments such as Vienna`s Steirereck. Hobby and professional chefs love all of his creations, be it rare roasted grains, elegant fruit juices or of course the various oils and vinegars. An enormous range for connoisseurs!
